Can you fit LED bulbs to the A3 8V?

Most trims of this car have halogen headlamps. In the UK, a halogen headlamp unit on a car first used on or after 1 April 1986 must not be converted to LED or HID bulbs: the MOT inspection manual (§4.1.4) treats a converted unit as a fail, however bright or well aimed it is. “Retrofit LED H7” bulbs sold for these cars are for off-road use. Halogen upgrade bulbs (+150% and similar) are legal because the unit is unchanged. Sidelights, indicators and number-plate LEDs are a separate question — E-marked LED versions of those are road legal.

Questions people ask

What dipped beam bulb does the Audi A3 8V take?

H7. Standard halogen dip beam across UK-spec A3 8V halogen headlamp variant.. Verified — the source is shown on the card above.

Is the main beam the same bulb as the dipped beam?

Yes — one H7 does both on this car. Same H7 bulb doubles as main beam on the halogen reflector unit..

Did the A3 8V change bulbs at the facelift?

Front fog: H8. H8 on birnen-typ and mk-led.hr A3 8V page; audi-sport 8V owner also cites H8. boslla's H11 claim likely US-spec (US A3 uses H11) or LED kits fitting both bases. Facelift 8V (2016+) S-line/LED cars have LED fogs, non-replaceable.

What if my A3 has xenon headlamps?

Cars with factory xenon use a sealed D-series capsule for dipped beam, not the halogen fitting above. Check the printing on the back of the headlamp unit or the handbook page for “D1S/D2S/D3S”.

Can I put LED bulbs in the A3's headlamps?

Not legally in a halogen unit — the MOT inspection manual treats a converted headlamp as a fail. Halogen upgrade bulbs are fine. Details in the legality section above.

What brake and tail light bulb does the Audi A3 8V use?

W21W. Often listed as P21/5W. Brake is single elsewhere — filament W21W (582) in outer cluster; tail is separate W16W in inner (tailgate) unit per Hella 2TZ 012 834 spec. Not a P21/5W twin-filament.. Separate bulbs on this car.
